Cantors

Music Ministry
Cantors

The Cantor is the leader of song at all liturgical celebrations and sometimes musical instructor of the congregation.

Cantor duties and qualifications have varied considerably according to time and place; but generally a Cantor must be ready to lead all the singing in church, to start any chant, and be watchful to prevent mistakes in the musical movement of the liturgy.

Cantors at the church of St. Anthony are assigned to the various liturgies by the Choir Director and are required to attend the weekly choir rehearsal and extra rehearsals for special events. At the present time all positions of Cantor are filled.

Sometimes there are family members or friends who are liturgical music ministers or cantors in another parish and they graciously offer their talents for special liturgical celebrations, such as weddings or funerals.

If you wish to bring in your own organist and/or cantor, it must be approved by our Choir Director who is present at all liturgical celebrations.

You may invite a family member or a friend to sing one of the approved songs before the liturgy begins or just before the liturgy ends.

The retainer for the organist is $175.00 and stipend for the cantor is $125.00 and should be paid at the time of the appointment for music planning. The Choir Director receives the retainer mentioned above even if you bring your own musicians and cantor.

To schedule appointment with our Choir Director, Ms. Carol Newman, a graduate of The Juilliard School of Music in New York, please call our Music Ministry office at (973) 304-0476 as soon as possible.
